Day 5: Worst Book of 2013

Welcome to Day 5 of Parajunkee’s Book Blogger’s New Year’s Challenge which I've decided to take part in to start the year off right.

Worst Book of 2013:

The worst book of 2013 for me was Allegiant by Veronica Roth, that book just pretty much wrecked me/broke my brain for a solid week or so.

Here’s a link to my Review/Rant of Allegiant (the review is spoiler free but the rant has some spoilers so beware if you check it out): http://bibliognome1.blogspot.com/2013/11/reviewrant-allegiant.html

Here are my biggest issues (spoiler free) with the book:

* I read the author’s explanation for why she felt she had to end it that way and see why she thinks like that but everybody is entitled to an opinion and sees things differently and I definitely saw it differently. I just don’t think the ending fit the tone that was previously set up.

* It felt like it wasted so much potential with the characters and the story.

* Certain aspects that seemed to be of the utmost importance turn out to not really be as important as implied.

* I was so freaking mad/sad at this ending because I really thought a different ending was being set up.

* With this ending I kind of wish that this trilogy had been a standalone.

  1. You are not the only one that I've heard that has been disappointed with the way the series ended. I've been avoiding reading the last book because of all the reviews.

    1. Yeah, I really loved the first book, the second was okay, but the third is all over the place. I might recommend listening to it over reading it because it's really long too. I guess it is worth reading just for knowing how the series ends but yes disappointed describes my reaction pretty well.

  2. I loved the first book. But for me the series went off the rails in book 2. I don't think Roth knew where to go, and the whole reason for the dystopian society was really... lame? I don't know. I'm actually fine with that one thing that happens to that one character at the end of Allegiant, but the alternating narration was kind of awful, because I couldn't tell the difference between the voices. Really the only thing that bothered me about Allegiant's ending is that it felt like the ending to the second book. I would totally recommend everyone read Divergent, but then maybe just stop there.

    1. Me too the first book was so good but after reading all of them I do wish that Roth had stopped there...

Yes it did go off the rails a bit in book two I did have a bad feeling when it ended like that too. Lame is a great way to describe the reason for their whole society when they started talking about purity and all that I rolled my eyes pretty hard.

I would be fine if the major thing that happens to the character made sense there just wasn't enough explanation for me that and a lot of other story issues made me give it just a little over 2 gnomes/stars. It would have been totally different rating wise if the ending had been devastating/made sense (kind of like Bloodrose by Andrea Cremer which I rated much higher then this one.)

The ending after the major thing that happens to a character also made me mad because nothing was really final and like you said it did feel like the second book ending.

  3. You're the second blog I've come across that's name Allegiant as their worst book of 2013. I haven't started the series yet but I'm slowly getting turned off because of people's thoughts on this book. Is it worth reading?

    1. The first book Divergent is really good and definitely worth reading but the books do kind of go down in quality after that so maybe read the first one and then listen to the last two if you want to know where the series goes.

  4. I felt that easy about Mockingjay and I've never let myself get that attached to a series again.

I didn't like this one either and the least of the problems a was the ending (although that didn't feel right either.)

"* Certain aspects that seemed to be of the utmost importance turn out to not really be as important as implied."

Yes!! Why bother with ALL that stuff it it really didn't mean anything. What a waste of time.

    1. Yes, it's like why did I bother reading after the first book.

Yeah it definitely didn't feel final enough for an ending.

Exactly it's like if this was her solution all along why go along with all the other mythology/stuff she made up in the first book...

  5. I think I was one of the few people who actually like Allegiant - but I definitely get why others didn't!

    1. Thanks :)

I'm glad you liked it, I liked parts of it but the ending and a certain character's fate just really made me mad.
